Black Friday - film screening invitation on 6th sept 2009 at Ranchi |
Time and again, civil societies end up losing their civility when faced with mayhem… those become the times when artist get up and show the mirror to people and bring back sanity and heal the wounds… Black Friday examines the Bombay blasts of 93 in such a way that truth pricks, but heals too in the form of introspection in the viewer's minds… This week's screening for Ranchi Film Club is the yet another masterpiece by Anurag Kashyap… Black Friday (duration: nearly 3 hrs) 4.00 P.M, Sunday, August 6th Ranchi Film Club (ILCC, British Library) Club Road, Ranchi Matt Zoller Seitz of The New York Times described 'Black Friday' as "epic and raw, and cut out from the same bloody cloth as Salvador and Munich. British director Danny Boyle has cited Black Friday as an inspiration for his 2008 award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. It was screened in many international film festival and won awards (Grand Jury Prize at the 3rd Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles in April 2004) Director- Anurag Kashayp Producer- Arindam Mitra Soundtrack and background- Indian Ocean (declared a "must buy) Song- Piyush Mishra Cast- Kay Kay Menon - Rakesh Maria Pavan Malhotra - Tiger Memon Aditya Srivastava - Badshah Khan Dibyendu Bhattacharya - Yeda Yakub "I have riots in my movie too. Riots are riots wherever in the world -- whether it's Hindus killing Muslims, Muslims killing Hindus, black killing white, whites killing blacks. I relate to all this in a film as to a man killing a man. It doesn't matter whether it's in Rwanda, Gujarat or Mumbai. It should not happen." Anurag Kashyap (director – Film Black Friday) Anurag Kashyap is one of the most controversial film directors of our times, who has shown a kind of reality of our times in celluloid while most film directors are puppets of the market. Anurag Kashyap wanted to be a scientist, so he did zoology honours in Delhi. He did drugs, and got involved with a [Delhi street] theatre group called Jana Natya Manch in 1993. He did theatre with them. Black Friday is about the 1993 Mumbai blasts, and is based on a book by S Hussein Zaidi. It starts three days before the blast, and then shows the police investigation. The film is about the investigation, how the police cracked the case and the conspiracy behind it [the blasts]. This film was stalled by high court judgment but finally got released. Black Friday, a brilliant exploration of the investigations into the 1993 serial Bomb Blasts in Mumbai, also got tangled up in a long winding court case, its release being delayed for a long, long time. Though made in 2004, the film finally released in February 2007. Based on Hussain Zaidi's book, the film is a wonderful cinematic journey into the investigations of what happened on March 12, 1993 . which left over 257 people dead. Anurag expertly interprets the book cinematically as he manages to convert the film having a huge cast and following a complex structure, criss-crossing between the past and present, into an extremely engrossing piece of filmmaking. Black Friday has been praised the world over. We invite you for the screening of this film and the discussion that follows the screening… Thank you. Ranchi Film club __._,_.___
